The piece was featured in two group exhibitions and then installed in my living room for many years. In September of 2022, Ian directly hit our area as the most powerful storm we have ever seen. Several of my close friends lost their homes and everything in them to the storm surge, wind damage, flood waters, and fallen trees. Upon hearing this news I decided to open my home and provide shelter as I had power and water back before most. Most nights were spent making large family meals and talking to each other to help heal. It was on one of those first nights that one of them noticed the word SURVIVE in this piece and proceeded to tell me how important this work was for everyone staying there, it was also the first time someone was able to read it on their own which has stuck with me. The work was again exhibited one last time for my solo exhibition on the impacts of hurricane Ian on this area, with a small print run that sold out at the opening. It has been a part of my personal collection with the sole intent to sell it only to a foundation or institution that prioritizes community and helping those who are in need. She represents migrant mothers who work the fields to put food on our tables while navigating the threat of family separation. The child at her side honors those who have been taken from their families and the sacred halo honors the dignity of farm labor that so often goes unseen. Challenges with relationship, relationships, housing, stability, Finances, health challenges and more can feel like we are being buried. Through our own healing practices, resolution of trauma, receiving a helping hand from the kindness of others, and believing in ourselves, we can excavate our true nature from the burdens that surround us. Sometimes we have to dig deep, and rip off layers in order to reveal what’s underneath. This piece was a multi layered process which involved exactly this practice. Beautiful designs and colorful foundations were buried under thick paint which was removed to reveal the Complex, inspirational, creative life underneath.

This piece is part of my shadow work series where I noticed shadows of my beautiful plants the term shadow work is often used in counseling and spiritual practices to indicate that we’re going deep to understand the depths of our own personal darkness or trauma. I believe this is very important work because there is beauty in the shadows. We can choose how we view life, and how we choose to rise. The yellows and pinks and reds of this painting, emit the idea of joy and upward trajectory That is available to us despite our challenges.
